Vitamins and Minerals: Body’s Building Blocks

Vitamins and minerals are the healthy substances that we find in the foods we should eat in our regular diet. These substances are needed by our body in order to build and maintain cellular health to regulate a healthy system, as well as create the electrical charges our cells need to function and reproduce. We get them naturally from organic food sources such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, cold pressed oils, and animal sources such as eggs and meat.

Vitamins can be categorized under two heads; fat soluble and water soluble.
Vitamin A, D, E and K are soluble in fat and can be stored within body.
Vitamin C and B complex are soluble in water. These vitamins need to be dissolved in water prior to their absorption within the body itself. The body excretes excess amounts of these vitamins. Since you do not store these vitamins, it is necessary to consume vitamin rich foods in your diet daily.

Minerals are obtained from inorganic substances that essentially come from soil and water. These enter the roots of plants in soil or are eaten by animals. We need minerals in larger amounts, especially for our growth and development. Calcium is such an essential mineral that we require in great amounts for bodily growth. Magnesium is essential for many balancing functions, including helping calcium be absorbed by the body. Others trace minerals such as zinc, iodine, chromium, copper, iron and selenium are needed in lesser amounts on a regular basis for healthy body functions. Green leafy vegetables are rich in minerals. Consuming plenty of vegetables and sea vegetables is recommended to consume required minerals.

Food is essential to the body. The way we feed our body with food is the defining difference whether our body is strong and healthy or weakened with disease. There are a variety of foods rich in vitamins and minerals so varying the diet with lean protiens, fresh organic fruits and vegetables, nuts and cold pressed oils will provide the body is a healthy well balanced approach.
